New prospects: Bulgaria is setting the course for a new ecological future.
Bulgaria is, together with its neighbours Romania, the latest member of the European Union. The decision to join the EU has meant that the country is facing some huge challenges. It must now make every effort to improve the standards in the country to meet those in the other EU member states – and this is also true for the water and environmental service branch. The processes required to improve ecological standards are in full swing.
Projects that are attracting attention
With REMONDIS’ support, a number of exemplary solutions have already been initiated which are, in many cases, acting as a role model. One such example can be found in the west Bulgarian city of Bansko. Here, the local authorities are, together with REMONDIS, mastering the necessary investments to create a future-oriented water supply and wastewater treatment system. By setting up an intelligent public private partnership, it has become possible to design, build and operate a modern sewage treatment plant and sewage pipe network. This project is already attracting attention from regions beyond this picturesque ski resort. For more and more local authorities are beginning to realize that they need to work together with a strong partner to achieve genuine changes.
Many Bulgarian municipalities had to close down a large number of production plants in the 90s. REMONDIS is providing them with important support helping them to start over again by investing in a modern infrastructure. |
