Accumulators and batteries.
Dangerous – but valuable.

The number of accumulators and batteries being recycled is increasing: each year more than 800 million are sent for recycling. A large number of them end up in REMONDIS' processing facilities.

Accumulators and batteries contain substances such as mercury, lead, zinc and cadmium, all of which are highly dangerous for the environment. They are, therefore, listed as hazardous waste. Retailers selling accumulators and batteries are, therefore, obliged to take them back from consumers free of charge. Special collection containers can also be found at schools and local authorities for button cells, flat batteries and co. or you can take them to your nearest recycling centre or hand them in to REMONDIS' mobile hazardous waste collection vehicle. To find out when and where contact our hotline number: 0180 208 0 208.

What does REMONDIS do with accumulators and batteries?

For accumulators and batteries to be recycled, they must first by separated according to type. An x-ray procedure may be used here which enables more than 20 batteries to be sorted into different categories every second. During the ensuing processing stages, we primarily recover usable heavy metals. Final products are, for example, nickel or zinc that can be used, among other things, to produce stainless steel.

Accumulators and batteries often contain mercury. It is recycled by us according to the highest standards and can then be used, for example, to produce high quality low energy light bulbs and fluorescent lamps.
